Where will I do Phase 1?


There are 5 training centers for the British Army. Which center you go to depends on the regiment you are hoping to join.

Where will I do Phase 1?

ITC Catterick

Catterick, North Yorkshire, England.

This is where all infantry recruits, Footguards, The Parachute Regiment and The Brigade of Gurkhas, complete the Combat Infantryman's Course. A combined Phase 1 and 2 training.

Junior infantry soldiers will complete Phase 1 at AFC Harrogate and then transfer to ITC Catterick for Phase 2.

ATC Pirbright 

ATC Pirbright delivers Phase 1 Training for new recruits joining:

  • Army Air Corps
  • Army Medical Services
  • Corps of Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers
  • Corps of Royal Engineers
  • Corps of Army Music
  • Royal Armoured Corps
  • Royal Regiment of Artillery
  • Royal Corps of Signals
  • Royal Logistic Corps
  • Adjutant General’s Corps
  • Intelligence Corps 

ATR Winchester

The Army Training Regiment Winchester (ATR(W)) is located on the north west outskirts of Winchester in Hampshire. The ATR(W) delivers phase 1 training over the duration of 14 weeks for Standard Entry (SE) recruits.  The course is designed to develop the individual and team skills in a progressive manner, preparing recruits for their Phase 2 training, where they learn the specific skills for their chosen Army trade.

Recruits will join one of the following Corps:

  • Royal Armoured Corps
  • Army Air Corps
  • Royal Regiment of Artillery
  • Corps of Royal Engineers
  • Royal Corps of Signals
  • Royal Logistics Corps
  • Corps of Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers
  • Adjutant General's Corps
  • Army Medical Services
  • Intelligence Corps

AFC Harrogate

The Army Foundation College (AFC) is in Harrogate, North Yorkshire and trains young people to become Junior Soldiers for the various Corps and Regiments of the Army.

Students must be aged between 16 years and 17 years and 5 months when they start training.

ATR Grantham 

Army Training Regiment Grantham is located in Lincolnshire and is the British Army’s location for training the Army Reserve Phase 1 Recruits.
